Chinese May Holidays 2025: Why Is It So Crowded? (五一劳动节 Labour Day)

✨ It’s finally the May holiday — you’re ready for a relaxing break, maybe a scenic trip or a nice meal out… but wait — so is everyone else in China!

Trains are sold out, hotels are fully booked, and tourist sites are packed like sardines.🐟
So… why does it always feel like the entire population is outside during 五一 (Wǔ Yī)?

🎏 1. It’s One of the Longest Holidays in Spring

The May Day holiday used to be just 1 day, but in recent years it’s often extended to 3 to 5 days, making it the first real chance for many people to take a break and go somewhere far.
Unlike the Chinese New Year (for family reunion), 五一 is perfect for traveling, relaxing, or just going out with no pressure.

📅 When is 五一 in 2025?
In 2025, the Labour Day holiday falls from May 1st (Thursday) to May 5th (Monday).
With 5 full days off, millions will be hitting the road. Expect bustling stations, crowded tourist spots, and busy restaurants all around!
(Work make-up days: April 27 and May 11.)
📅 2025 五一劳动节 Holiday Schedule
Holiday dates: May 1 (Thu) – May 5 (Mon)
Days off: 5 days total
Make-up work days: April 27 (Sun) and May 11 (Sun)

🧳2. The “Golden Week” Mentality

Although only 3 official days are off, the government sometimes adjusts surrounding weekends to create “Golden Weeks” — extended holidays that make travel more worthwhile.
This means:
  • More people have the same free days.
  • Everyone is trying to make the most of it.
  • Result? Tourist traffic jams everywhere!

🌍 3. Traveling is Part of Modern Life

In today’s China, traveling has become a lifestyle. For young people, families, and retirees alike:
  • 打卡 (dǎkǎ mark a visit— especially for trendy places or must-see locations) at hot spots = trendy
  • Exploring = stress relief
  • Going out = status + fun
It’s not just about the destination anymore — it’s about sharing, experiencing, and showing you’re living life to the fullest.

🧠 4. Supply Can’t Keep Up with Demand

Even though China has many travel options, the demand during 五一 is massive:
  • Train tickets sell out within minutes
  • Flights surge in price
  • Even smaller towns see a boom in tourists
It’s not that we don’t have enough places — it’s just that 1.4 billion people are planning at the same time 😅

🎯 What Can You Do?

If you want to avoid the 五一 crowds:
  • Travel before or after the holiday (if possible)
  • Pick “low-key” cities or hidden gems
  • Avoid peak hours and well-known tourist spots
Or… lean into it! Enjoy the energy, the crowds, and the buzz of being part of something big! 🌏🎉
Yes, it’s crowded. Yes, it’s chaotic. But behind the crowds are people like you, looking to relax, recharge, and connect. That’s something worth smiling about 😊
五一快乐! Have a great May Day holiday — even if it’s shoulder-to-shoulder!
