At SN Mandarin, we believe that learning Chinese should not be limited to the classroom. Language becomes much more meaningful when students can use it in real situations, communicate naturally, and connect it with everyday life and culture. That is why we regularly organize cultural activities and city experiences that allow students to explore China while practically improving their Chinese.
Last week, our students joined a special Suzhou Creek City Walk led by our teacher Jane. The activity focused on exploring the history and cultural atmosphere of old Shanghai while allowing students to practice Chinese outside the classroom environment.

The walk started near Huangpu Theatre and continued along the historic Suzhou Creek area, one of the most culturally rich parts of Shanghai. As students walked through the neighborhood, Jane introduced the stories behind many of the historic buildings and landmarks along the route. Students learned about different periods of Shanghai’s development, including the elegant social culture of the 1930s, the growth of national industry, and the financial history connected to old warehouses and former bank buildings located near the creek.

For many students, it was a completely different way of experiencing the city. Instead of learning only from textbooks, they could see the history directly in front of them while hearing and using Chinese naturally throughout the activity.
During the walk, Jane explained historical and cultural topics in Chinese while encouraging students to ask questions, interact with each other, and actively participate in conversations. Students practiced useful everyday vocabulary, listened to natural spoken Chinese, and used the language in a relaxed and engaging environment.
Many students shared that the activity felt less like a traditional lesson and more like a “walking Chinese class.” By combining sightseeing, conversation, and cultural learning together, students were able to feel more confident using Chinese in real-life situations.
Suzhou Creek itself is one of Shanghai’s most interesting historical areas. In recent years, it has become a popular place where old Shanghai architecture meets modern city life. Walking through the area allows students to experience both the historical and contemporary sides of Shanghai at the same time.

Activities like this are an important part of the learning experience at SN Mandarin. Besides regular Chinese classes, we organize themed cultural activities every month, including city walks, museum visits, traditional festivals, local food experiences, and seasonal events. These activities help students improve their communication skills while also building a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and daily life.
For international students living in China, experiences outside the classroom can often become some of the most memorable and valuable parts of language learning. They create opportunities to practice Chinese naturally, make friends, and discover new parts of the city in a comfortable and supportive environment.
As summer approaches, SN Mandarin is also preparing for our upcoming Chinese Summer Camp programs. The summer camp combines Chinese language classes with cultural activities, city exploration, and immersive experiences designed for international students of different ages and levels. It is a great opportunity for students to improve their Chinese while experiencing Shanghai in a more interactive and meaningful way.
We look forward to organizing more cultural activities and helping students continue their Chinese learning journey both inside and outside the classroom.
