The Story of the Chinese Zodiac
As the story goes, during the great river race, the Ox was about to reach the shore first, but the Rat played a clever trick, jumped off the Ox’s back, and snatched first place. The Ox had to settle for second.
So who came third? The Tiger.
The Tiger was incredibly fast, but got distracted by the scenery along the way — stopping to look around and explore. By the time it refocused, the Rat and Ox had already reached the shore. Still, with its strength and speed, it secured third place.

Fourth place went to the Rabbit. The Rabbit wasn’t slow either, but it had no one to help it cross the river. It had to hop all the way by itself. By the time it finally made it to the other side, several animals had already finished ahead.

虎 | Hǔ | Tiger
In Chinese culture, the Tiger is the king of all beasts, representing courage and strength.
Chengyu (idioms) about Tigers:
虎头蛇尾 (hǔ tóu shé wěi) – literally “tiger’s head, snake’s tail.” Used to describe starting something with great enthusiasm but ending poorly — strong start, weak finish.
如虎添翼 (rú hǔ tiān yì) – literally “like a tiger growing wings.” Used to describe a powerful person gaining even more strength or advantage.
兔 | Tù | Rabbit
In Chinese mythology, a Jade Rabbit lives on the moon, pounding medicine under a cassia tree, keeping company the goddess Chang’e. So the Rabbit carries a sense of gentleness and ethereal beauty.
Chengyu (idioms) about Rabbits:
守株待兔 (shǒu zhū dài tù) – literally “guarding a tree stump waiting for a rabbit.” From an ancient fable: a farmer once found a rabbit that died by running into a tree stump. After that, he gave up farming and just waited by the stump for more rabbits to come — but none ever did. This idiom describes someone who sticks to old experiences and refuses to adapt.
